Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is full body systemic approach to the diagnosis and treatment of myofascial pain. Myofascial pain is pain associated with pain in muscles or the muscle skeletal system without a defined reason (i.e. no obvious inflammation). IMS is an evidence based model supported with clinical research to its effectiveness to alleviate pain.
The effectiveness of IMS is based on a thorough subjective and objective assessment conducted by a physiotherapist to determine neuropathic pain and chronic pain. Neuropathic pain often follows the path of a nerve or nerve root that is entrapped. Chronic pain also has a neurological root and often can not be explained with medical images or scans.
IMS is performed with the use of single use thin acupuncture needles to release tension of a muscle surrounding a joint or nerve that has become shortened or distressed. By stimulating that muscle, the muscle is fatigued and is able to relax/release offering relief for the individual.
