Vestibular Rehabilitation is a program which uses movement, exercises and education to alleviate inner ear dysfunctions. This form of treatment is commonly used for symptoms associated with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s disease, labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis plus many more. Many individuals have found themselves suffering with vestibular hypofunction for years and find their symptoms alleviated with a few treatments.
When the vestibular organs are damaged with disease or injury, the brain cannot rely on them for accurate information about equilibrium and motion, resulting in dizziness, vertigo, balance problems, and other symptoms. Some recover from these symptoms without needing any treatment while others these symptoms can create a major disruption in their lives.
However, if the vestibular compensation process is not successful, a person’s ability to maintain posture and coordinate balance may become overly dependent on input from the eyes (vision) and muscles and joints (proprioception). In addition, the person may develop new patterns of head and body movement in an attempt to avoid dizziness and nausea.
With vestibular rehabilitation all of this can be avoided and restore an individual back to a life free compensation, nausea or dizziness.
